How To Recognize And Treat Gum Disease
Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, affects the tissues supporting the teeth in addition to the gums. It is caused by dental plaque, which can harden into tartar if not removed by brushing and flossing. Factors such as poor oral hygiene, tobacco use, genetics, diabetes, drugs, and hormonal changes can increase the risk of gum disease. Gum disease can manifest in a variety of ways, such as red, swollen, or sore gums, bad breath, receding gums, and loose or shifting teeth. Adopting good dental hygiene practices is the best way to prevent gum disease, such as using fluoride toothpaste, flossing, using mouthwash, eating a balanced diet, and quitting smoking.
